How To Make a Scrapbook With Kids

I don’t think scrapbooking will ever go out of style. Learning how to make a scrapbook with kids is one of the loveliest ways to capture family memories. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a scrapbook with kids from scratch using simple craft supplies you probably already have at home, ready to fill with all your lovely memories!

Why Create a Scrapbook

The first scrapbook I made with my son was our holiday one. We love doing ours outside in the Summer (doing one together snuggled up in cosy blankets in Winter is also lovely) and it’s an easy activity that turns shells from the beach, tickets, photos or anything from your adventures into a memory book.

Creating a scrapbook brings joy in so many different ways: making the book itself, collecting photos and little keepsakes, and looking forward to filling each page with memories. The experiences and adventures themselves. Then there’s the joy of choosing a slow afternoon to design and decorate the pages together. Years later, you can look back through the pages and relive those moments together.

What You Need

I always like to see what I can make with what I already have at home. Most of these supplies are useful to keep in your craft box, so if you’re missing a few items it’s worth stocking up before you begin.

  • 1 x coloured A3 card stock or a paper with a higher weight (around 170gsm)
  • A3 white paper (however many you want!)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (or measuring tape and a book or similar that you can use to make a straight line)
  • Ribbon or thick string
  • Hole punch
  • Any coloured pens/ pencils for decoration

Instructions

Step 1

Measure the width of the page and mark the centre point. Then measure the height of the page, making sure the ruler passes through the centre mark. Draw a straight line down the middle and cut along it so you have two equal pieces of paper/ card.

Step 2

Get your white paper into a pile neatly on top of each other. Measure and draw a 1cm border around the edge of the paper with your ruler. Cut along the lines to cut off the edges.

Step 3

Repeat step one for your white paper.

Step 4

Put all your cut pieces of white paper in a pile with all edges in line. Now put one piece of your card at the top of the pile and one underneath, making sure the left edge is aligned with the left edge of the white paper. This will be your front and back cover.

Step 5

Slide your hole punch into the centre of the left edge, making sure it is directly in the middle. Punch your holes.

Step 6

Cut a length of ribbon slightly longer than you think you’ll need. It’s easier to trim the excess later.
Making sure the holes are aligned, get your ribbon or string and thread it through one hole from underneath so the loose end is coming up onto your top cover. Repeat for the other hole so you have two equal in length loose ends coming through.
Get one end and loop it back through the same hole, across the spine of the scrapbook. Repeat for the other side.
Tie the two loose ends into a bow and trim any excess ribbon.

Step 7

Decorate the front cover!

If you ever want to add more pages to your scrapbook, simply repeat the process from Step 2 onwards and insert the new pages before tying the ribbon again.

Another Idea…

Another scrapbook idea we’ve started doing is documenting our flowers and vegetables as they grow throughout spring and summer. If it’s your child’s first growing project, you could give it a title such as “My First Marigolds”. You could take photos as the plants grow, record the different stages, and write about what has been easy, what has been challenging, and what you’ve learned along the way. You could even add pressed petals or leaves from your plants.

I would love to see your scrapbooks so please tag us on Instagram @littlegreencreators or send a photo!
